Do I have to go to the police station for an interview?
If a member of any Massachusetts police department has contacted you, and requested that you come down to the station for questioning, it is extremely important that you contact a criminal defense attorney ASAP. We can discuss your situation, and I will help assess the best approach based on the facts and circumstances as you know them to be. Sometimes it is best to grant the police an interview, and sometimes it is not. In most circumstances, you are not required to speak to police, and you certainly should not do so without a lawyer. You will only know how to approach this very sensitive matter if you consult with an experienced Massachusetts criminal lawyer. If we determine that an interview is the best approach, I will represent you at that interview and make sure that your rights are protected. It is unlikely that the police will advise you of your rights prior to such questioning- and they are not required to do so if you showed up at the station voluntarily (i.e. you were not already arrested). They will use tactics to elicit information from you that may later be used against you in court. It is therefore very important to make sure that you have legal representation to ensure that the police act fairly and you do not answer any questions that may later harm you.
I am available for a free initial consultation. Contact my office if the police want to speak with you.
